If neck pain is driving you crazy, reclaim your sanity by taking action to eliminate it. Here are some ways you can achieve this, courtesy of our Atlanta chiropractic clinic.
1. Change your workplace - Poor workplace ergonomics are a leading cause of neck pain. If your office desk and computer monitor are too low for comfort, you may be hunching over and allowing your head to fall forward. This places undue strain on the neck's nerves, ligaments and muscles. Adjust your equipment so that your eyes are level with the top third of the monitor -- this will help you maintain a healthy neck/head position.
2. Target your trigger points - Muscle knots can form into trigger points that inflame the nerves, referring pain to any part of the body -- including the neck. A healing modality known as trigger point therapy can help identify and release those painful knots.
3. Get more active - Even a healthy work posture can put strain on the neck if you remain in one position all day. Take frequent breaks to perform gentle stretching exercises so you can relax those stiff neck muscles and get extra blood and oxygen to them. If you have weak neck muscles following an injury or long-term health condition, physical therapy can help you regain your muscle strength and flexibility, enabling you to hold your head up with less strain.
4. Get your alignment evaluated - The cervical (neck) spine is vulnerable to misalignment and injury, as any whiplash sufferer will attest. Even a small misalignment can cause a cervical disc to shift out of position, stressing adjacent nerves. Regular screenings by our Atlanta chiropractor, Dr. Craig A. Senft, can help spot any cervical problems that require correction via chiropractic adjustment.
